It should definitely be respected. It represents who we are and what we do.

I'm not sure I can address a "need" for tradition and culture, but it is something that is fundamental to human nature. In other words, culture happens. Over time, cultural elements will become traditions.
The orthodox liberal point of view is that all cultures and traditions must be respected. I consider myself liberal, but I must break with that credo. For example, slavery was long a part of the culture and tradition of the southern U.S. Had we not challenged the legality and morality of that institution, we would have never ended the injustice.

As you know, America is the melting pot for cultures around the globe. That's a premise that our country is build upon. Why wouldn't we respect tradition and culture. I think today, more than ever, we need to be tolerant and accepting of other cultures. Preservation of traditions is important for future generations.

First of all, not all traditions and cultures should be respected. They are not all equal, no matter how loudly the politically correct might insist.

Assuming that "our tradition and culture" are American, they ought to be respected because they played a significant role in transforming this land from a loose confederation of backwater colonies into the world's premier superpower. And we did it in just over 200 years--the blink of an eye, historically speaking.

We lead the world, not only militarily, but in the fields of science, business, medicine, commerce, innovation, culture, and many others.

Cultures ought to be judged by how much, and how quickly, they enable their societies to progress, and by this standard, American culture is best by far.

Love of self translates to love of others. Respect of tradition and culture carries over to respect of other peoples' cultures and traditions.
