I'm a junior and I'm taking regular chem this year, and I'm doing horrible compared to other classes. I plan on going into medicine, but chemistry is not for me. I'll have to take it anyway in college, but I cannot bear to get a grade lower than 4 since I plan on applying to ivys. I'm afraid it might hurt my GPA before college applications.
I signed up for four AP classes next year, but the only one that bothers me is AP Chem. Will it hurt my future if I replace it with AP human geography???

Understanding the material that is taught in AP Chemistry- whether you learn the information in high school or in college- is vital to your chosen field.

If you think that chemistry is simply not your "thing," I'd strongly suggest you find a different field.

If, on the other hand, you think that you'll "grow into" understanding chemistry, go ahead and put it off till college, and keep your sights on a medical education and career.

Chemistry does not get any easier. In fact, high school general chemistry classes are a walk in the park compared to college level chem classes. If you are going pre-med I 100 % garantee you will have to take two semesters of general chem, 2 semesters of organic chem (probably the hardest class you will take as an undergrad) and biochem. I suggest you learn to love it because it will be a big part of your life the next couple dozen years. Go ahead and take AP chem so you will be better prepared for college chem. Good luck.

I am in the same situation as you right now. I am a junior, im taking 3 AP classes next year, and I am currently not doing so great in chemistry. I know that AP chem wasnt right for me, and since I want to go into medicine, I decided to take AP Biology and AP Physics instead. I would recommend you take AP bio as well, because it is a flunk out class in college. As for physics, you dont really need to know a lot about physics, because you dont use any in medicine, but I just took it for fun.

You should probably just take the high school level chem course, or if you want, an honors class. Believe me you should just take chemistry in College when you have had more of a background in it already. Besides if you are already taking 3 other AP classes you are going to be very busy already. Basically you are going to have to slack in one of your courses if you try to do too much at one time. There is nothing wrong with waiting until college to take those classes. Believe me college level chem is extreamly difficult and very fast paced.

You don't have to take AP chem, but if you can't understand the material, you'll never pass your med school exams. You'll need 2 semesters of college chemistry minimum, as well as 2 semesters of physics. If you don't get it, maybe medicine isn't for you.
