It's always good to try and focus on improving your weak points. For the jaguars that would be receivers and quarterback. However, with one of the best defenses and a great running game, why not improve on the strong points. The Jaguars defense was one of the best last season, why not work to make it the best. Get another good running back, perhaps more of a power type to go with maurice jones drew. With a very stingy defense and a dominating running game opponents will struggle to score points. You can't score if your offense doens't get on the field and its hard to force turnovers on defense if your opponent is running the ball most of the time. Especially in their division, keeping Manning and Young off the field would be a really great idea.

The Jags are notorious as an up and down team. This comes with youth in my guess. What I have read about them and heard the TV announcers say is that they don't play "smart". What that means I can't say, but it seems a common theme among the "pundits". I think they mean they let their emotions get in their way and it makes them inconsistent. Who knows? Those aren't my words. Talent is NOT their problem, that's for sure.
My favorite team is the Colts and we all know there is going to be a war when the Jags are the opponent. They pretty much played a perfect game when they smoked the Colts. The Colts couldn't find their rear ends with both hands that day. I credit the Jags for that.
On the other hand the Colts seem to have found a way to settle down and play more consistently. Look how they came back from that streak of poor games near the end of the season. I look for the Jags to come on strong and be much more of a force this coming year. Again, I reference the Colts. It seemed like they would come unglued when they played the Patriots, while the Pats were steady all game and all season. I have no doubt that the Patriots actually taught the Colts what it takes to win.
I did look up their season results and you are EXACTLY right about the up and down results. Beating teams like Dallas, Pittsburgh, the Jets, Eagles, Giants, and Indy were true accomplishments.
You had to be pulling your hair out when they lost to the Texans twice though. However, consider this: close losses to Indy (SB winner), New England (AFC Champ Game participants and 3-time Champs) and KC (another playoff team) are no disgrace.
Bottom line: They just needed to beat the teams they were better than and they would have been right in the thick of things. It could be worse. You could be the Cardinals!!!

As you said they have a very strong running game with Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. Their obvious weakness is WR. They need to upgrade at that position. They also need to decide if their starter at QB for next season will be Byron Leftwich or David Garrard. On the defensive side, they have a very very good D-Line. Their D-Tackles are 2 of the best in the league. When Mike Peterson comes back healthy, they will have a strong LB squad. Rashean Mathis leads the secondary with great safeties in Donovin Darius and Deon Grant.
Their keys to winning are playing around their strong running game on offense and not giving up big plays on defense. They were 8-8 last year which isn't bad but doesn't get you into the playoffs in the AFC. The first thing they have to focus on is beating divison rivals. They lost to the Texans (the worst team in the divison) both times they played them.

At wide receiver, 1st round picks Reggie Williams and Matt Jones didn't live up to expectations. There was also instability at QB, where Byron Leftwich, David Garrard and Quinn Gray all took snaps. Safety could be a concern if the Jags can't resign FS Deon Grant, in addition SS Donovin Darius is coming off a broken leg. The team has a stingy defense and only a few holes to fill via the draft and free agency. If they do this, and get more consistent play from their QB, they can be seen making the playoffs.

Get a new QB, one that is consistent and good. That consistent is the big problem right now. As to the winning against a good team like the Colts, they were competitive against the Colts for YEARS. They just finally got it done. I think part of that goes back to playing in the division of the Steelers and Ravens for years. They learned some from that. The FRANCHISE learns some from that. Although maybe the problem with the QB may be the wide-outs as well. Maybe if you gave him the WRs he could do better. It is a little like the Chicken and the Egg thing.

They need to be more consistent at QB and in their defense. It also would help if their recieving core stayed healthy. However there ground game is in great shape if Dead Fred stays up for most of the season and there D is not that far off either. With some consistency and a few well placed personnel moves they are a playoff calibur team

Their first priority should be to decide on a starting QB. Then after that they need to get a true passer rusher on their defensive line. The third thing they need is a legitimate No. 1 receiver, Wilford, Jones and Williams are nothing but No. 3's.

They need to be consistant. Year after year they start out the season great and then start to go down hill. They have a very good team that has a destiny with Maurice Jones Drew, David Garrard, etc. They just need to be consistant throughout the entire season. Watch out for this team next season.

I don't think it's anything offensively or defensively, they just need to play CONSISTENT. They beat the good teams and then lost to the less than stellar teams. They need to clear up the QB situation, though, once and for all.

Get rid of Leftwich, hope for a decent season with Garrard.
They need to draft a up-and-comer QB and have him take over in a few years.
