HAVE A CERTIFIED ARBORIST LOOK AT THE TREE. ONE THAT IS FAMILIAR WITH CABLING AND BRACING METHODS. TAR AND CEMENT DO NOT AID IN THE HEALING OF A TREE.

if youre tree is splitting at a fork go up about 2to 3 feet and tie it together tightly use a comalong or something to cinch it up TIGHT. Over the next couple of seasons the tree will repair itself, although it may create a knotty looking v it will be stronger then before..... You can use tar or roofing cement from your local hardware to seal the open SORE in youre tree from infection. This is also good practice when trimming larger branches, just seal the cut.

No tar or cement but you can try wrapping a cable or a piece of chain around it.....it probably wont work either Sorry to hear about your tree i lost one this winter too

depends on where it's splitting;are there any heavy branches that could be removed? tie a heavy rope around the trunk--sounds weird but we have a tree on our local golf course that's been bound with rope for over ten years and it's still health and growing.
