Hi, I know there was already a question answered, but my situation is slightly different. My basement smells like sewage as well as paint, gas, etc; things we haven't been using in our home.

In front of my home, the street looks as though it's literally sinking, plus we have a hydrant in front. I live in NY and I've called 311 (our non-emergency line) numerous times, but to no avail. I don't know what to do.

My questions are: Could it be a break in the line? Who is responsible for repair? How can I get the city to help?

TIA.

Have you checked the ventilation pipe? I have been doing construction for nearly 20 years, and there are a few things that can cause this situation. Also does your basement floor have a drain? You might want to make sure it is not clogged. Most cities work like this, any pipe from house to road is the home owners problem, once it reaches the road it is city's problem. Sounds to me that you have a sewer vent line either cracked or broke. I hope I have helped.

Rather than aggrivate yourself. Buy yourself an Electrostatic Filter for your furnace. It will remove odors, mold and mildew from the air. I got one and GONE are the odors of moldiness, mildew smell and all those things you mentioned. I have a sensitive nose and believe me this thing fixed it to 100% my satisfaction.
