Deferrments such as Cheny recieved have always been a part of Selective Service in he United States.
Many a college student recived more than that amount and many within government and even seated senators recieved deferments during Vietnam.
During Viet Conflict it was a standard joke "that the reason it was called Selective Service was because some old fart selected you and then the old farts and rich boys selected how they could get out of it.
During the Civl war a man could get someone else or pay for a deferemtn or be deemed too necessary to Union, or the Confedereacy for that matter, or too ill.
Cheny did not do any different than men from all walks of life did during those times.
I wish the friends I lost in that green land of blood red had done the same as he did.
But then of course it was that ty0e we were fighting for and all the while we tought it was our country so men like thgose on the wal and who served honorably, many did not, deserve to be men because they were pure in soul.
I cannot say the same for Cheney, Pat Robertson, Bill Clinton, the Bush and many of that ilk who today run our political/ military/religious and finacil circles.

I don't know, but that was common during Vietnam. All the well connected could avoid the draft by getting slots in the reserves (not open to the general public - like me at the time) or college deferments for degree upon degree. I have to say...Kerry went and could have avoided it. Just as Elvis Presley did... Elvis pulled his duty as a citizen. I have to respect these individuals.
But, would I allow my son or daught to go to Iraq. Absolutely not. I'd send them to Canada, just as the smart ones did during the Vietnam war.

Here's a detailed list of who served and who didn't. Compare the list with their political stances on the issues and the thought that something is amiss pervades.
