I think the best long term way is large tubs of ice. Not cheap, but certainly the coldest option.

Put the cans in a wet sock, hang it in the shade and keep the sock wet. As the water evaporates from the sock it also removes heat from the can. It isn't very chilled (like from a fridge) but the drink will be cooler than the air temperature.

take frozen cartons of juice or water with you and surround the beer with them. Also keep the beer in coolbags and DO NOT open the coolbags until on the day. Keep them in the shade at all times. Don't put them out of the tent at night they will only get nicked

For about 100.00 or less, you can get a cooler that hooks into your lighter. Believe it keeps it cold even w/car off.
I got mine at a trucker station before they got smaller and more popular; try googling.
If winter, yes, digging in the ground, IF the authorities will let you; hey, hey, hey.

put some (the ones you don't intend to drink on the first day) of the cans in the freezer the night before you set off, if you keep them in a cool bag / box (out of direct sunlight) they usually stay cold / cool for 2 days, sometimes more.
