It breaks my heart. His face will get all red and he's just straining and grunting. I breastfeed. His bowel movements are the right color, not hard pellets or anything, but maybe a little pasty. I just feel like something's wrong or like he's having trouble passing gas and pooping. Any reassurances or explanations?

I have two children, and both of them were/are like that. I have a newborn too, and something that really works is Mylicon. IT's completely safe because it's not absorbed into the body, it just stays in the digestive tract to help break down the bubbles. On the box it says you can use it at every feeding because it's so safe (I know giving babies medicine at this age can sound horrible, but it's pediatrician recommended). Just a tip though, the actual Mylicon brand is pretty expensive. Most stores have a generic brand, and it's exactly the same thing. Or there's a Little Tummy's by the Lil Remedy company and it's the same thing too.

His digestive system is just still so immature, it'll get regulated and easier. Good luck!

This is normal. The orange juice is a good idea. JSYK, newborns abdominal muscles are weak and the majority of them can not just push it out. The crying actually contracts the abdominal muscles and moves the bowels. This is what my pediatrician told me when I experienced the same thing. It was also in one of my breastfeeding books. Be patient.

my daughter went through this, here is a couple things you can try. lay him down in a diaper, and do leg exercises. take his legs and bicycle them back and forth, then take his legs and gently push them into his belly and release, push and release, over and over. this should help him pass the gas. you can also lay down with you shirt off, have him in a diaper and lay belly to belly, the warmth can help pass the gas also. he will eventually have a mature enough digestive system to where this wont happen as often. if he is constipated try some watered down prune apple juice, it really helps. Gerber makes it in a small bottle thats perfect. but you might wanna wait till he is about 3-4 weeks old. well good luck!

How old is he?
Something that helps my daughter( and all my other kids too) is if I drink orange juice before nursing .
Have you tried giving a little gripe water or ovol to ease the gas pains?

My doctor told me not to worry unless they were pellet like or my baby's belly became hard. He said I could give her apple/prune juice, but when I did, her bowel movements became explosive/watery messes.....

The best thing you can give your baby is Mylicon. It is perfectly safe for babies of all ages. Its for gas and you can get it at pretty much anyplace. You can also put it in the formula if you don't want to put it in the dropper. I wish you the best of luck.

i know how you feel. my son did that at that age. it's nothing to get worried over until he doesn't do it. all babies normally get like that because believe it or not it is something new for them to experience. they even get red in the face at later ages too. as long as he's not crying while trying to do either is a great sign.
