1. I've tried Save As...General Options... and typed in my password and saved it, but it always opens up without prompting me for a password!

Go to Tools on the Menu bar and select "Options"

Under the Security tab it will have a place to add a password for the document. You can set one up for opening or even modifying the file.

Try Tools -> Options -> Security Tab -> Password to Open
Should work for Word XP (2002) and Word 2003.

use folder lock 5.0.1 it locks folders then just put files you want to lock in a folder and lock it
