You need to have an idea of what students are "supposed" to already know by the time they come to you. In this way, you'll know what to build on when you begin teaching the skills that *you* are supposed to impart to them at this stage. You also need to know what they will be taught at the next stage so that you can better prepare them. You will know what areas to focus more attention to and be able to explain why certain skills are necesssary for them to be familiar with for the future.
