Each one of these cities is independant has developed its own subcultures, and varies greatly because of the geographically location.

NYC and SF are only similar because they both shared a cramped proximity near the ocean.

The greater Los Angeles area is 2000 square miles, a little more than one quarter of Los Angeles County. The city is enormous and the most fun of the U.S. cities you listed. Of all the places in the U.S. and the world I have traveled there is not another city like Los Angeles.

Living in SF, Portland, London, NYC, is similar due to the cramped conditions, traffic, smog, and general lifestyle.

However, living in LA is different due to the extreme view that people take toward their personal freedom, and of course the indomitable wealth of the region.

Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Its a pretty cheap city to live in, i image way cheaper than New York and if you like football we are going to win again this year so its fun when it comes to sports. Each year Pittsburgh is making the city better and better. A plus for you is its not to far from New York so if you don't like it you can just move back. I suggestion taken a week off of work and come visit it here, and if you like it move here. :)

Although I agree with those who say each city is distinct and unique, I do think major cities in this country have a couple of commonalities...

- They tend to share a love of fun and an orientation towards creativity/innovation.

- They serve as focal points for politics, finances, fads, and revolutions.

- They also tend to have problems like crime, overcrowding, homelessness, and pollution.

- They are very diverse -- ethnically, culturally, and socially. You'll find a good mix of classes, religions, races, sexual orientations, and what not.

- They are also quite expensive to live in. And coincidentally, the three you picked are actually 1, 2, and 3 on the U.S. list.... New York (1), San Francisco (2), and Los Angeles (3).

NYC is a wonderful city with a big variety of people from all walks of life. Always something interesting to see. You never feel alone, but sometimes you feel like you need to get away-vacation perhaps.

Well in NYC it's a lot of walking, kind of hectic...at the same time once you get to know your area it's great.
