Are you kidding? It is a very important skill.

It teachings thinking and logic - important pre-science and pre-math skills, as well as it teaches kids to discriminate between the characteristics. Why is the car different than the boat? Which can lead to visual discrimination of why is the A different than the B.

If you need to ask this question, I wonder why you are teaching?

Well, we have inventory coming up and we don't inventory Department 85 stuff only department 6 stuff. So that is what I am doing right now, classifying and sorting objects. It's a real world situation.

which students? my special education students did it as job training. sheltered workshops have groups that sort through used parts and separate them for future use.

It most probably helps to develop parts of their brain linked to recognition as it helps their understanding which increases their intelligence.
