We are flying in coach class, and this will be our wedding week.
Do airlines upgrade you for $, or can the attendant upgrade you if you just ask? Should we "slip them a $20?"

I used to work for an airline in Las Vegas. You can usually pay $50-100 each for an upgrade on certain airlines. If you want a 'comp' upgrade here's your best bet: The person who has the power to upgrade you is the gate attendant. This is the person who opens the jetway (hall that leads to the airplane) door and rips your ticket. First be really nice and start a friendly conversation with them. Ask about their day and if it is really hard, or if the customers have been nice that day. Then ask them if you can get them a cup of starbucks or something. (Don't offer them money they aren't allowed to take it). Or tell them 'I'm going to go get you guys a box of chocolates, you are working way too hard today" and then go buy it for them from a place in plain sight so they know you are not giving them poison food. Then give them the chocolate, or starbucks, tell them you are just so happy because you are on your honeymoon. Then say, "hey if you want to upgrade us to first my fiancee would love that so much".

Word of caution: Don't bother trying to get upgraded if the flight is full. You can ask the person at the ticket counter to find out if the flight is crowded. Don't try to do this if the gate agent is really busy or has a line in front of her. Don't try it if her supervisor is at the counter with her. Just check the name tag to find out.

You can get an upgrade for money sometimes. Check ahead with the airline. When I arrive at the ticket counter I always ask about an upgrade. Sometimes I get one comp. Never hurts to ask. Same for hotels and their different types of rooms.

PS - My wife and I were married in Las Vegas. It was a great time. I always like to stay at the MGM Grand. Their two wedding chapels are awesome. Book them in advance.

I do think the rule is that you got what you pay for. If you would like to pay for a buisness class then you can probably do it (check the rules for your fare class!). The best other way is to ask the check in staff nicely and tell them that your honemoners. Be politely and they might upgrade you or do something else for you. But dont be angry on them if they dont do! And no bribes please! Johan
