1. In the start/programs menu look for the startup folder.
2. In the start/run menu enter msconfig.

You can use a program called CCleaner it is 100% free and has a very easy startup list you can remove items etc. it is available here
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/websitehomepage/FreePCHelpStuff.htm
Or you can get to the startup from going to run and typing msconfig and choosing the startup tab, take the tick out of all the items you dont want there. You can really leave just firewall and virus software running. Other programs you can choose to start at any time on the pc.

I use the program "Chameleon Startup Manager" for it.
http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).
Here you can read about startup programs (if in manager not information):

It depends greatly on what operating system and window manager you are using.
Assuming you are using windows there are the startup folders under each user's start menu, and there are several registry folders that contain "hidden" startup programs (yahoo search for "windows startup registry"), but I would not recommend messing with those if you don't know what you are doing.

if you want them to start on startup, just stick them in the start->programs->startup folder. if they are starting and you DON'T want them to (and they aren't in that folder) then you may have to check the settings or preferences of the individual programs.

go to the following folder:
C:Documents and Settings\(your user id here)\Start Menu\Programs
These are the programs that will start when you launch windows. If you want a program to start, put it's launch shortcut in here. If you don't want one to start, delete it's shortcut.
