I avoided Debt wherever possible,
When I bought a car, I save up the cash until I could afford it.
I seldom use credit cards, I pay cash for stuff... Paying cash, imprints on your mind, you are actually trading hard earned money for the thing you are buying...not just showing a card. It makes you think...and if you don't have the money in your pocket, you have to go get it, and by the time you get back, you find you really don't want/need it anyway.
For a house, I saved up big downpayment and paid as much as I could on the mortgage every month, and really tried to not spend but put the money on the loan.
First house was paid in 4 1/2 years, a second house took 3 1/4 years.
That is a whole lot of interest that i DIDN'T give to the bank.
Living simple gives you lots of money for investment, or trips or whatever.
But Staying out of debt and not using credit cards is the key.
