The truth is kids just want your quality time and full attention. Packing a simple lunch and taking your kids to a nice park is actually a good time for kids. Buy some fun snacks you don't usually have on hand and watch your kids light up. Bringing along games or cards and playing at a picnic table is actually something kids really enjoy. Invest in a new game to bring along intead of blowing money on a place like Chuck E Cheese. Not to mention, when the day is over, you will still have your investment, the game to keep! The key here is giving your kids YOUR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION! At the end of the day you and your kids will have bonded in a special way.

Gettysburg, PA. It is very educational for children and has many fun areas. If your children like war or history, they will love the Gettysburg Battlefield. If you and your family like hiking, there's a lot of that too. A popular hill on the battlefield by the name of Little Round Top is a challenging hike, with rocks and boulders strewn left and right. Devil's Den, a huge formation of gigantic boulders at the foot of Little Round Top, is also good for climbing and hiking. If you are interested in horseback riding, you take a ride on a good strong horse around the battlefield for a good affordable price. There are also great museums like the Civil War Wax Figure Museum, the Cyclorama Exhibit (the Cyclorama is a gigantic painting which goes around a huge room in a museum. The painting, painted by Paul Phillipoteux and actually created by my ancestor, Lt. Col. George McFarland who fought in the battle, depicts scenes from the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, and events from the famous "Pickett's Charge". Not to forget, the once general and later president Dwight Eisenhower's summer home is open to the public just outside the battlefield. And for meals, the restaurants in Gettysburg are excellent. There's a large selection of restaurants to choose from. There's The Dobbin House (a home turned restaurant previously owned by a man named Mr. Dobbin, a citizen of Gettysburg at the time of the battle) which serves fancy food. There's a Chinese restaurant called The Lotus Flower I think that serves Chinese food if that is on your appetite. And then there's just the plain fast food restaurants for take-out if you want to eat your meal on the go. So yes, Gettysburg is an excellent place to take your children. If you do choose to go here, I wish you the best of times.

For girls, Libby Lu is a cute little shop in malls where they can get their hair & makeup done, plus take home some cute accessories and crafts.
Build-A-Bear is another great mall destination. Kids get to make their own stuffed animals - much more than just bears!
Theme parks, the movies, ice skating...all fun places to go with kids as well. You could also take them on a day trip to another city :)
