No but if you havent paid for an extra seat you wont be able to take the car seat on board, it will have to go in the hold. Attach a luggage label to your buggy/car seat and leave them at the foot of the steps (or at the door if you are using an airbridge.

You only pay extra if you have paid for a seat for them. None of these counts towards your luggage allowance. You should be able to check the car seat in as bulky luggage as you can only use this on the plane if you have paid for a seat for the infant or they tell you at check in that a seat is available and it must comply with their regulations if its used.
I have flown several times with my children when they were all infants just make sure you plan everything in advance and contact your travel agent or airline for any advice as each company has their own guidelines.

Most airlines do not charge for pushchairs and car seats. Depends where you are going, of course, but it might save time and effort if you checked with car hire companies, for example, who may provide car seats for you. If you are visiting relatives, may be they can lay their hands on a suitable cot arrangement for you to save carrying one. If baby is very small, perhaps you could take a pram which could double up as a cot.

This depends on which airline you are flying.
You might want to either call or find the website of the specific airline you are flying with.
Most of the time, airlines (even British ones) allow a lap infant to have a carseat, a small (foldable) pushair and one bag, free of charge.
I checked britishairways.com to see if that was accurate, and their website says that all that is allowed, free of charge.
The travel cot, assuming it weighs less than 23kg/51 lbs (per BA regs), would count free as well, but you'd have to pack baby's clothes in with yours.

Usually a child under 2 travels for free, and they store the carseat and stroler at the front of the plane until you exit at the terminal. I have traveled by plane many times with my son, and NEVER had to pay any extra for him until he turned 2. Once he was 2 I had to purchase his own ticket. Hope this helps!

Most airlines do not charge for children that are young enough to sit on a parent's lap, however if you want to use a car seat you will have to pay for the extra seat.

The Britax marathon is probably going considered one of the few automobile seats certainly qualified for use as a seat on an airplane. As huge and cumbersome because it relatively is, I even have one, like it and would take it with me. As one poster mentioned nonetheless, get between the return and forth friends which you would be able to strap the motor vehicle seat on after which you are able to use it as a stroller besides!
