Anyone who has eligible itemized deductions greater than their standard deduction may and should itemize. Most of the time, someone without mortgage interest and property taxes doesn't have enough to itemize, but if you do, you definitely are allowed to.

You should choose to itemize if it is more than std deductions as it will give you more refund or less tax libility.
