He's usually his normal, happy, cheeky self, but recently, he keeps saying things like "you dont like me thats why..."

the other day i was talking to him on the phone and had to leave quickly, so i explained to him that i had to leave, and then left

but afterwards he was like "you only left so soon because you dont like me"

And this isnt the first time he's said something like this - he's like a best friend so he knows i like him! I even tell him i like him! Then why is he behaving like this - its driving me nuts!

What kind of reaction does he expect me to give?

AS others have suggested he could simply have developed a crush/pash for you and is having a problem expressing it. He may want a deeper relationship but is afraid it might undermine your friendship. The solution is simple, either "you are on the same page" or your not. Either way you need to talk.

The alternative is that "he is going through a phase". What are his other relationships like, Parents, siblings, school friends. Does he think he is misunderstood, is everyone against him. Some teenage boys have always felt like that, but it takes on different forms. Is he sporting a stupid hairdo and listening to "emo" music? All are indications he is becoming a "tragic Youth".

And how can you be a real tragic youth if you have a best female friend who not only likes you but can read you like a book? Hence his "you don't really like me". That could get rather tedious.

If he doesn't believe you just ask him to go to the movies with you or have a night playing like softball or a game for friends. That is what I do. It should work. And the reason maybe that he is acting awkward is because he thinks you are rejecting him. Maybe he is starting to have a crush on you. It is possible. So what I would do is ask him out and if he says "Yes" It proves my point. If he says no. I was totally wrong. And your reaction should be ignoring him or not talking to him until he starts you better like a friend.

Has he recently had a fall out with someone ? He sounds very insecure. He obviously needs alot of attention which is not good for any relationship. I think you need to sit him down and ask him what is going on. Ask him if you have ever given him reason to doubt your friendship and explain that he is at risk of loosing you as a friend if he can not stop his silly insecurities.

I think you should tell him that he is like a good/best friend and nothing more. This meaning like as in boyfriend. I think he is leaning towards the boyfriend part. So you and he are on the same page I think you need to tell him.

It sounds like he's looking for a boost of his self esteem. He's questioning if you like him because he needs verbal reassurance.

Tell him you like him and tell him he doesn't need to ask all the time. Try introducing him to new people too, to help expand his horizons and expand his self confidence.

Okay you need to stay away from this psycho. He is obsessed with you and does not care about you, so I wouldn't worry about him when you decide to cut him off. He needs time away from you to figure himself out because his mind is obviously muddled right now. Seriously you cannot continue this friendship he does not want to be your friend. He wants to control you, and you are too young and too good for his crap.

He might be feeling lonely or insecure, maybe that's why he says these nasty things to het your attention. If you guys are really close friends, talk to him and find out why he's being like this.
