We depend on information for living and for survival. Long ago, before human beings had discovered and invented ways of storing information outside their bodies, nature found out a way to store information. This was memory. It plays a fundamental role in all human activities, especially intellectual ones. Without memory there would be no learning. I think all cognitive processes rely, to a greater or lesser extent, on memory. It is through analysis of old information that we discover new things and memory plays a crucial role in this process.

In response to your primary question, memory is tremendously important because without it you would not be able to function. You wouldn't remember who anyone was (your friends and enemies etc) or how to drive a car or tie your shoelaces, or anything about the past.

A theory of memory is known as the 'Levels of Processing' theory which says that retaining information is a by-product of processing (thinking about) information. If you would like to know more see:

What apart from walking about all bumping into each other??? but if you dont have one don't worry, as soon as you miss your council tax they'll be 'round to zap' the date and amount into your skull ... you're only as clever as your memory.

Surely in it's simplest form, the answer would be 'for the survival of the species'. Clearly if you couldn't remember your mistakes you wouldn't last too long!

Well, to survive. If you think about it, everything we do is based on our memory --eating, drinking, communication, etc. If we simply forgot to eat and drink every day, what would happen?
