The day I got married my grandmother pulled me aside and told me: "Don't ever take yourself out of the workforce, even if you just work part time. You have to keep your work history current because you never know what will happen and you have to be able to support yourself". Considering what happened in my life after that, it was very valuable (and valid) advice.
