Unfortunately you don't mention what kind of fish it is. Many fish change color as they get older. Parrot fish are dark gray with lines when young, and become orange when they mature. Dome fish are injected with dyes at the nursery before being sold to pet stores, and after a few months the dye fades. Gold fish change color as they get older and putting them in a sunny location for a while can bring about a color change. Some African cichlids lose some of their bright colors when they mature. Most small fish that grow after you buy them were babies in the store, and naturally will change colors as they mature.

Quite a few fish will do this - especially brightly colored ones or ones that contrast with the color of the environment. There's nothing quite like these colors to advertise "Here I am!". So most fish will become pale so they blend into their environment better.

It is age- it has happened to two of my older goldfish, too. They are about 12. The younger ones are still gold. Incidently, they often have black patches on them when they are young- and these fade after about a year.

This is common and nothing to be alarmed about. Some fish change color just like humans hair color changes as they age. It also might have to do with a recent food or enviromental change.

The older they get the change color.
P.S.:If you bought your fish fully grown from a petstore it might have actually been 1 year old.

they change colour due to many reasons-mainly maturity and/or if they are placed in a light area,is the tank/bowl in total daylight? That can cause the scales to fade.
