It is a parents responsibility to put the child's needs before their own. And to some degree that may mean a delay in pursuing their own interests. It's not to say that the parents shouldn't have a life outside of the children, afterall most parents have each other and that is an important relationship that needs just as much nurturing as a child. You have to know, understand and accept what being a parent is all about before you have them. But most don't. It's handled like a wing and a prayer. But alot of us have made it work ok. Or maybe it is why there is so much disfunctionality in our families today. Not enough education as to what it really takes to raise a family.

A life devoted entirely to one's children is not a fulfilled life. What happens when they grow up and move out? You will have nothing left. You must seek interests outside the home. This is what too many women neglected to do fifty years ago, and they were unhappy.

Once children are in school and have thier own schedule for the day many Moms find plenty of time to pursue further pursuits. Its harder to do with younger children. Most women benefit from a hobby. Many go to the gym. A parent doesnt lose her personhood. There will be enough time to do most of what you want to do. Children benefit when Mom is happy so dont deprive yourself.

Parents should also pursue their own interests, kids grow up fast and make a life for themself and by that time parents feel too old to bother with their own goals. In saying that dont neglect your kids, always be there for them and the will respect u.

Although their kids should be their top priority, it's foolish and unnecessary not to pursue any of their own interests (that don't include their kids)...not to mention, there's no reason to make their kids their complete life focus...

Part of being an emotionally healthy parent and a good one, is having a balanced life...not using their kids as their complete focus...that's either obsessive or someone who is hiding from Life.

Why not do both? I am a devoted mother and continue to pursue my own interest.

Children should definitely come first. There's nothing wrong with pursuing your interests, but your children have priority.

The adage "children are happy when Mom is happy" is not necessarily true. Children are happy when their parents spend time with them and value them.

You should find a way to balance both. You sacrifice of yourself for your children, but your hopes and dreams are the wrong thing to give up. Depending on your interests, you may even find a way to include your children.

Parents should not give up interests, but the children should come first.

Look at the Crocodile hunter. Think his kids would rather have a father?
