The Chinese new year is based on the lunar calender, which is based on the stages of the moon. That's why it's on a different day every year and it's different from the western new year. The Chinese have 12 animals that symbolizes each year. This year is the year of the Pig. The Chinese new year is celebrated for a week. This year it starts on Feb 17. If you get a chance, join the celebration in your city's Chinatown. You'll get to watch dragon dances and firecrackers and eat really good food.

Chinese New Year is based on the Chinese calender, not like the calender we know today. That's why it's not always on the same day. It's the year of the pig. This is all I know about it. Hope it helps you.

its not based on the gregorian calender, which is the one you use but based on the lunar calender, the moon traveling across our sky and its positions. Therefore, it changes every year because the moon changes its positions every year. It isn't on January 1st, but around February. It's not really a history but a different calender used. The lunar calender is actually much more ancient than the gregorian one we use today. Hope that helps.
