Richard Doll was the first scientist to make public his findings on the connections between smoking & lung cancer (and heart disease). His findings were published in the British Medical Journal in 1950:

"The risk of developing the disease increases in proportion to the amount smoked. It may be 50 times as great among those who smoke 25 or more cigarettes a day as among non-smokers."

that goes back 50 years or more but the big tobacco companies used to deny it and came up with all sorts of evidence to the contrary.also ,smoking was much more widely practised and the population was reluctant to believe it.i remember in the 50's they called cigarettes ' nails for your coffin '.
