I lost my W-2 from my former job 4 or 5 years ago. I didn't get to file it. If I get my W-2, can I file it for this year or whenever I get it? And how do I get a copy or of my W-2 from my former job. The thing is I don't remember where I used to work. What should I do?

You'd have to file it for the year when you actually made the money.

You could call the IRS and they might be able to give you the info, but if you don't remember when or where you worked, that might be a little hard. The other thing you could do is just wait to hear from the IRS about not having filed this. If the taxes taken out on the W-2 were more than you owed for the income, it won't be a problem except you won't get your refund - but if it's 4 or 5 years ago, you've already missed the deadline to claim a refund. And if you haven't heard anything by now, you probably won't if it's really that far back.

Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040, they can provide you with transcripts of your W2 information and have it mailed to you in 7 to 10 days, or by fax if you have access to a fax machine. If you need an actual photo copy of the W2's you would need to complete form 4506 and send that along with a check for 39.00 for each year to the service center where you filed, it will take 60 days to process your request
