In simple terms it is when your emotional brain sends information (electronically) to the more developed part of your intellectual brain. What triggers it to happen in the first place is a positive desire to access an answer. Personally intuition appears when I am well rested, even more so after about 4 hours sleep when I have gone to sleep with some question on my mind. I am sure there are chemicals and hormones which show up at these times but who knows whether they are cause or effect......logic tells me effect.

The Upanishads describe several components of mind.
Chitta is the component connected with intuition. Modern
psychologists say that passions have the same
limitations of senses as they tend toward immediate
emotional discharge. Chitta is the quick acting
component of the mind which can be termed as leftist or
negative thinking part. It is called negative because
some psychologists felt that it separates the received
information into pieces, contains unintentional and
contradictory ideas, and lacks internal organisation,
inner consistency, and concrete solutions. On the
contrary, some philosophers thought that this is the
'idealistic view' of thinking about a problem. This
center can handle divergent thoughts like a
multi-channel parallel processing hardware in a super
computer. Chitta is connected with instincts, urges,
impulses, desires, emotion, imagination, sentiments,
passions, caring, pleasure, exploration, unconventional
ideas, moods, insight, superstitions, immodesty,
immorality, analysis of details, concern about
particular features, capacity to find novel
relationships, unrestrained expressions connected with
body or mind, molding of past experiences into new
constellations of meanings, creation of artistic, poetic
and musical works and the like. Seeing a good work of
painting or listening to music of one's liking will set
waves of emotion in Chitta. It helps us to imagine
things in new ways. It is known that lighter side of
life like fun may contain silly and ridiculous
situations. An artist is said to go to the extremes to
divorce himself from environmental constraints.

What is intuition?...some call it one of our senses. we have touch, smell, taste, hear, sight and then we have what some say is our 6th sense which might be intuition or ESP . I believe that intuition is our mind or conscience sending us a warning signal. Of course the feeling doesn't always have to be a warning but a message to our thinking process.

Being a person who has been verified as having a fairly enhanced intuition, it is an ability to read people - their facial expressions, body language and speech patterns - with uncanny accuracy.

Having a feeling about something that is not based on any tangible experience or sensory perception. It is possibly the unconscious mind processing information. Or it could be that we are tapping into the universal subconscious.

Intutition is a guess coming from your hunches. It is not something that is irrational. The guess comes from one's ability to predict based on past experiences.
