I can't tell you for sure. The have a great system for young players. Plus it is a cold weather city. I think it is mainly because of a lack of support.

My money is simply on demographics and economics.

You have to figure that:
Detroit, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Toronto, and Chicago are all within a stone's throw from Cleveland. Could this area realistically support another NHL team? Plus all the afore mentioned cities, unfortunately, are not experiencing alot of population growth, maybe the exception being Toronto. In fact, I think there is more of an exodus going on. It's much the same scenario as to why Buffalo doesn't have it's own MLB team. These are just my thoughts.

For whatever reason there has been a general lack of support for hockey in Cleveland. They have had the Lumberjacks for many years (IHL) and the Barons...twice they've been in existance but the support has never come. The Lumberjacks even played in a nice barn (same arena as the Cavs right downtown) and had reasonable ticket prices yet no widespread support. They were never seriously considered even though they had a nice arena when the Bluejackets were added. They are likely to close to other hockey cities in the U.S. and Canada to get the support....too many other choices so close.

I've always wondered why hockey is not more popular in the Cleveland area as well. With the population of Cleveland, Akron and Canton areas of NE Ohio, you would think there would be more support. But the Crusaders (WHA) and the Barons (NHL) gave it a go, but it didn't last long. Perhaps the area has enough NHL teams as it is with the Redwings, Bluejackets, Penguins and Sabres.

Didn't have enough support to keep the Lumberjacks. Can you blame the NHL for trying another city. So they picked Columbus. Heck if the Lumberjacks had still been around and thriving when the Blue Jackets were brought in, then they may have been in Cleveland instead.

Why should they have a Hockey team when they don't even have a "football team."
