Actually,shells are calcium carbonate and are indeed made by the creatures who live in them. As babies they have no shell, just drift on the currents until they eat enough to begin the shell secreting process. The best part is they can add on as they grow bigger which is why you see all sizes of the same kind of shell.

The little snail critters that live inside them create/ secrete Calcium, to make their home on their backs.
Never have to worry about an eviction notice from a landlord, but sometime those pesky hermit crabs come along and kick em out, or, perhaps the hermit crabs are nice and just use the old shells they find around that fit their size.
Hmmm...Calcium, secreted by sea creatures, such as snails, sounds wrong to me...
Maybe they are born in the shell, which is produced by calcium, and they keep growing...
I think they make em themselves...You better try a search engine, cause my answer seems to make no sense at all.
