It can seem a little scary....believe me I know ( I delivered twins, and am pregnant again)... I loved my epidural....the hardest part of the epidural is when you have to lean over in labor and hold really still and I mean really still! after it is in though, you'll be glad for it!!! Scale of 1-10, epidural is cake, maybe a 3 at most. Not sure about Chicago hosptials though....... Congrats for baby..... you'll be fine....... enjoy!

Never been to Chicago, but I've had 2 epidurals and plan on having one with this baby as well. The worst part of the epidural is not pain (there's really not much, it's more pressure than anything, just do what the anesthesiologist tells you to do) it's trying to bend over your huge belly and HOLD STILL while it's done (and you're in the middle of contractions, nurses will be on hand to help you). It doesn't take long once they prep you (cleaning the skin and numbing the area). I have back problems so the epidural was probably the only thing that allowed me to have a vaginal delivery rather than a C-section. You may have some pain after, keep ice on the area the next couple days. There are some slight risks w/an epidural, most common is a spinal headache, depends on your following directions and the skill of the anesthesiologist.
As far as being scared of pregnancy and labor, everyone is, you need to educate yourself on what happens. If you can, take classes at your local hospital. There are often free classes/programs offered by women's abortion alternative clinics, hospitals, and state/federal programs. Check with the maternity departments of your local hospitals and the county health department. Many books are available, the What to Expect series is good. (What to Expect When You're Expecting) Check your local library or used book store.
Good luck.

I don't know abotu chicago hospitals. The epidural, well it depends. For some reason I was given the epi at the same time I went into a contraction with both of my girls, so it didn't really hurt. I was more focused on the contraction. On a scale of 1-10, I'd say I give it a 2

really only about a 4 or 5 out of a scale of 1-10. But when i had my son 2 years ago i had an epidural and it made his heart rate drop and skip beats, which made them have to do an emergency c-section. I am now pregnant again and i am not getting the epidural. Not becuase it hurt because it really put distress on the baby.

the only individual who could make the alternative approximately getting an Epidural is YOU. i pick to take the epidural. It gave incredible alleviation after an afternoon and a a million/2 of exertions. i did no longer adventure any lasting effects and there have been no issues that got here of having an epidural for me or my toddler. i become up strolling around hours after giving beginning and that i've got not got any regrets approximately taking the soreness alleviation. you could make certain once you're going throughout the time of the soreness whether you like the epidural or no longer, yet undergo in strategies that exertions could have an entire life of its very own and your pre-planned expectancies could get positioned with the help of the wayside. solid success.

It depends on your pain tolerance....I personally am TERRIFIED of needles and wanted to have the baby natural just so I didn't have to have that big epidural needle, but then the pain got bad...they give you a numbing needle, and I swear it felt like a bee sting, and then I barely felt anything as he threaded the epidural in, and after I had no pain, but everyone is different, some friends had back pain after wards...but me personally, I didn't feel anything, after wards I kept joking with my boyfriend that I would be in labor 1000 more times if I always had an epidural, it was a piece of cake :) I rate it a 1

My wife said she could have cared less. She was so focused on the contractions and the pain from them that she said the epidural didn't even hurt as bad as getting her IV put in. However, it hurt me because she was squeezing my hand so hard, it actually went numb! I just asked her, and she rated the contractions a 10 and the epidural a 1/2...hahaha!! Good luck!!

When I had my first I had an epi and it wasn't painful to get but grossed me out a little. With my 2nd it was natural. I have to say that the epi was worse as it took me longer to recover and I puched so hard because i couldn't feel it that I tore pretty bad and had alot of stiches. With my sencond I paced myself and really it didn't hurt that much... the labour pains are tough but the pushing is not really that bad. I'd say I'd go natural again just because I was feeling good afterward and didn't have to have iv's and cathaters... makes a big difference in enjoying the first few moments of your baby's life. All labours are different though so I'd say try it natural and if you need it then take it... the needle doesn't hurt it's just a bit of a gross feeling.

you are going to be in too much pain during the contractions to feel the epidural. i was lucky while i had a contraction they shoot the epidural. i would ask for them to do this so you can only focus on one op pain. also watch out after delivery. if you have back op pain of any l kind let your obgyn know. this can be a side effect.

I am a C.N.A in a O.B. Dept. Most of our girls say it doesn't hurt to bad. They will numb your back before they begin. You may feel some pressure when they are inserting the cath. But like the others have if you have a cont.. during it it shouldn't be to bad. Just listen to the anest. and it shouldn't be to bad. The girls don't regret getting one. They are able to relax and get some rest/. Which you need your strength to push your baby out. Good luck.
