I have 2 dogs and 1 cat. I suggest the cat. They are so much easier to care for. You can also leave them for a day or so alone. Good job going to the shelter.
Most shelters have a lot of cats and it is nice when one (or two)gets a loving home.

first, look at the space u have. Do u have a backyard and plenty of space for a dog? Are u gone a lot? Who will be home with the dog? Dogs need more attention but love to be played with and loved. Cats like to be by themselves. If you feel bad about the animals in the shelter and want to help, get a dog. Cats really don't care. They like being left alone. Dogs need love and care. If you want to help the animal most in need, a dog would be good, just make sure that your house/apartment is enough space for him/her.

It depends on how much time you can really spend with your pet. Cats can be left alone longer, can use a litter box, etc. while dogs need to be walked, let outside to use the bathroom, etc. I have two dogs and they are a lot of work. They are high energy, eat a lot (go to the bathroom a lot :-) and require a lot of effort. That isn't to say that cats don't require that kind of effort but I would have to say that dogs are similar to toddlers- they have a tendency to make lots of messes and look cute afterwards! Also, training a dog takes an incredible amount of patience and effort as well. We had our dogs trained with the assistance of 'Kennelwood' a dog training facility. It was well worth the money and time spent.
I suppose I'm making cats out to seem like they're no big deal- quite honestly I have never owned one but I would have to say that dogs require a lot more than cats do. Perhaps if you do want a dog and lower maintenance you could look at smaller dogs? Make sure to do research on which are more friendly as opposed to yappy mean little dogs....we all know a neighbor who has one of those!
Anywho- best of luck. Just make sure you have enough time and love for whatever you decide to go wtih!

A cat is a better first pet since they are so much easier to care for. They can be left alone for 1 or 2 days if necessary, which you cannot do with a dog. They don't need quite as much attention you don't have to let them out every few hours.
Get a cat first. Later on, if your circumstances allow, then get a dog.

Speaking as someone who has had both, these are my observations. Dogs are more dependent. They need more attention, like regular walks, lots of outside running around time. Cats are more independent. If you have a clean litter box and leave food out for them they are fine.
Both dogs and cats are just as loving, but cats are easier to raise. If you have to go away for a few days you'll have to board a dog, but if you have cats you can have a friend come over and put food out.
Cats will live much longer and happier lives if they are inside kitties and not allowed outside.

Depends on how much time the pet will be home alone. Cats are better on their own than dogs generally, however thats not always the case. How much activity can you provide as far as walking, outside play etc....cats dont need as much.
It's nice that you are getting from a shelter and wanting to give a good home to what ever you choose.

You really need to do some research and find out what's best for you and your home. Lots of things factor in when getting an animal. What type of home do you live in? Does it have a backyard or are you in an apartment? Are you home more than not? Do you have the time and energy to walk a dog? Pay for training classes - Time to take them to the classes? Etc...
You'll find what's right but do it based on what's best for you AND the animal.
Good Luck!

it depends, do you want to give it a bunch of attention and go on walks with it for exsorsize(dog) or play with it, snuggle with it, and watch it do really funny things like always going in the bathroom and running to the toilet when your done because theyre confused on how the water all goes down.(cat) I love cats and dogs i have a labradore and a cat.
