Rutherford B. Hayes served as President from the beginning of 1881 up through March 4th.
James A. Garfield became President on March 4, 1881, and served until he was assassinated on September 19, 1881. His was the second shortest term of office in history, behind William Henry Harrison's - Garfield only served six months and fifteen days as President.
Chester A. Aurthur became President after the death of Garfield, and served as President for the remainder of 1881, having served until March 4, 1885.

If I'm not mistaken James Garfield was elected at this time as our 20th president. They called him the "last of the log cabin presidents". He ran against General Hancock. Then if I'm right on my history, Garfield was shot by an attorney that had prior differences with Garfield at a railroad station. Garfield died a few weeks later from the gun shot wound.
