For many years now the average motorist has sat back and let governments do pretty much what they like when it comes to petrol duty and road tax, pouring billions of pounds into the treasury that is supposed to pay for the upkeep of our road and transport system, but eventually ends up getting siphoned off for the NHS or to pay for the war in Iraq. Millions of motorists are also getting stung by speeding cameras, and because by and large most of us are law-abiding citizens, we've allowed events to get out of hand and only now are we beginning to wake up to exactly what the government is up to. Very shortly we won't need to be watching "Big Brother" on the TV, because it is happening in real life - ID cards, the largest number of CCTV cameras per person in the WORLD, biometric passports and this car-charging technology which will be able to track you and your vehicle anywhere and your personal information will be kept on a huge central government database. That is what is REALLY scary!

Britain is fast turning into a right-wing Orwellian police state. The actual tax is only the half of it - they'll take it from you one way or another anyway. The technology behind the tax is what most of us should be worried about! I am. I don't want Tony Blair to be able to turn on a computer screen and see a little blip indicating where I am at any given moment in time. Next thing you know he'll be trying to implant a chip in our heads for those who don't drive so he knows where everyone is always!

Yes, it's just another stealth tax which unfortunately for this government the public at long last are beginning to wake up to. If they genuinely want to cut congestion the answer is simple, just restrict the number of cars manufactured or imported into this country. Of course that won't happen because they make too much tax from every newly registered vehicle. In addition the surveillance of your vehicle helps this control mad government to be aware of your movements as a bonus as well as taxing you.

It is a Stealth Tax - no other meaning - it will not be used to ease congestion - it will be used by this corrupt Labour Government to fund the TRILLION £ debt that Gordon Brown has run up with hs empty promises to this country and payments to other countries!

AND Tony Blair is going to mail everyone to say that it is the way forward - IN OTHER WORDS - Mr Tony 'bungler' Blair isn't listening - so no change there then is there!

Obviously another tax but also a way of getting a lot of people off the roads. There are quite a lot of people that take their cars on journeys that they could walk in 5minutes. At the end of the day we all have things forced on us that we don't like. I am a smoker but will be forced onto the streets to have a cigarette on a night out, where I'll have to inhale the fumes from all the traffic that goes by. I hope a lot of the people that agree with the smoking ban drive cars, as now they will be able to feel what it's like to have something unfair forced on them.

No it is not a "stealth tax" because it would be perfectly obvious. Do you not think that something needs to be done about congestion?

As many people who signed the petition did so on the basis on misinformation from the car lobby, Blair's email is sensible and should be welcomed as a means of informing and encouraging debate.

it looks to me that Tony B-liar is going to waste thousands of pounds more of our hard earned money by sending out these emails to let us know that he isn't going to take any notice of public opinion and is going to go ahead with it anyway. He will probably employ a load of Polish immigrants to do them for him as there is no way he will sit there and reply to over one and a half million emails.
The guy stinks and the sooner he goes, along with the rest of his pocket picking scoundrels the better. The sheriff of Nottingham has got nothing on Tony B-liar.
