Knowing how to use the software is the first step. If you're going into graphic design, learn how to draw, solve visual and conceptual problems, and develop the ability to explain your ideas/designs with people who don't "get" graphic design. Until then, you won't get a job in graphic design. Go to art school. Do freelance work on the side (and take every offer you can). It won't be enough to pay for college, but you're doing it for the experience. Learn how to draw, learn about typography, put together a digital portfolio (in PDF format) of your best, published work. Apply for internships, learn the industry, gain experience. Then, maybe, you'll be ready for a job in graphic design. It's a fun field; don't let the challenge intimidate you.
