The best thing to do is to go to Chinatown and watch the parade and dragon dances. They usually have firecrackers and everybody is dressed in nice clothes and having a great time. I just got home from the NYC chinatown and it was a blast!
Traditionally, Chinese people clean their house up to the day before the new year (you're not supposed to clean your house on new year's day itself because it's bad luck). Then on the first day of the new year, you dress in new clothes and visit family members to wish them a lucky new year. The kids pay their respects to the adults and get red envelopes containing lucky money. Then in the evening, families get together for a banquet and eat tons of good food. The celebration goes on for 7 days.

Chinese New Year is traditionally a time when there is reunion dinner with the family. Our family members gather from near and far for this celebration dinner to renew our family bond. This dinner is held on Chinese New Year's Eve.
Red envelopes (packets) are given out to the immediate family with money as a good luck gift.

The day before you have to clean the house and eat fish for luck, but leave some left over so that luck will last. Then on the day, traditional sweets and stuff is eaten, generally you visit family and friends. And in order to get the red envelope with money, from say, your mom and dad you have to say "baba, mama, xin nian hao!" (which means, "dad, mom, have a good new year!") while bowing to them. And you get the red envelope with money, you can also do this with other relatives. And the candy on that day is good, we have all kinds of dried fruit, fried rice dough with sweet red bean paste in the middle, sticky candy, sesame seed candy and more, its great! Xin nian kuai le! (happy new year!)

Better ask a Chinese. There is no need to celebrate it. Just go on and do your work.

I don't do anything. My city has a China town area but it is so far from where I live that I have never got to visit it.
