Start with smarter public transportation. Extend the light rail systems and electric power network overhead. With Chinese assistance India could couple itself to the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Beijing meglev system. Brits have their BladeRunner ready to run on Indian streets and rail while powered by electric grid if
reader wants to ride a double-deck bus speeding up to 80 mph.
Compressed air or gas vehicles outside of the petrolchemicals
are available and offer electric fueling at personal residence.

In India, the best alternate fuel would be CNG(Compressed Natural Gas). Battery operated cars are also in high stake but you have to compromise Speed for that.. Another alternative can be bio-fuel espesially Jatroba fuels, this Jatroba oil really works and I can say this for sure coz here in Tamil Nadu, the Southern Railways has implemented this with 20% diesel and the best thing is that, if you use jatroba oil you dont have to compromise with speed coz it gives the same class of performance...NMN

Best alternate fuel is LPG, and cheapest too. My maruti car runs 320 km with one cylinder domestic lpg of Rs.310. My Bajaj super runs 140 km by two kg Lpg. The ONGC should give maximum priority to this task so that petroleum import can be minimized. ( My Scooter is running on unapproved kit and I fill domestic gas in car by unapproved electric pump, which I hope Govtt should allow legally ).

I had tried battery driven Reva car in year 2002 but after use of 30,000 km it required to change eight Exide heavy duty batteries costing Rs.42,000, so it is very costly in long way. Same problem is with Yo bike. Other problem you can not go more than 35 km, becoz total run time is 70 km and than require 6 hours charging.

hydro fuel cells. At this moment this technology is pretty expensive for use at commercial level. Therefore not feasible for developing country like India. May be in future.
