Gigahertz and Megahertz. It's basically the clock rate for a computer and it's really not as important as it used to be. A gigahertz is a 1000 megahertz and computers that are clocked in megahertz really aren't being made anymore. Computers can fit more instructions per clock cycle, so a 2 Ghz computer from today is faster than a 3 Ghz computer from a few years ago. Now they are going to multi-core processors which are basically a little bit slower clock rate processors doing the work but they do twice the work of the one core processors. Look for a dual core athalon processor which would be the Athalon X2 or the Core 2 Duo. And you want at least a Gigabyte of ram.

Yes, you are right, it is usually used to guage the clock speed of a computer (or CPU to be precise).
There is actually a lot of variables when it comes to fast computer (i'm assuming you are looking for a best buy but also a fast computer). The actual speed of the CPU will also depend on the type of processor (Intel Celeron, Pentium 4, Core Duo, etc).
It is hard to judge what a real "Good" number is... it all depends on what your real purpose of buying a computer (business, graphics, or computer gaming). A rule of thumb is that a higher number is usually the best.
If you are really looking for a good CPU, I would recommend getting a Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz with at least 1GB DDR2 (2x512MB - for dual channel) and get at least a video card with at least 256MB of memory.

1GHz is equal to 1000MHz, GHz is mostly used for processors now and MHz is usually referring to the FSB or how fast the memory is. GHz is used to measure clock speed and MHz is the same way. But keep in mind the old CPU's from Intel such as anything below a Pentium D was based on old architecture the NetBurst architecture which was inefficient and not very good anything above Pentium D had better architecture and is faster than NetBurst.

Ghz and Mhz are used to tell the computer processor speed. 1000 mhz make one Ghz. My computer is 1.6ghz thats a little better than average I have a good processor thats why I don't need like 3 ghz.
