sometimes i feel that europeans forget that the US isn't surrounded by a lot of countries. For example, americans are notoriously accused of not being worldly. it is not that we aren't aware of other cultures, it is just hard to really deeply understand them if you haven't been there before. and it is hard for americans to visit europe. i mean it isn't cheap. it's not a hop skip and a jump like it would be if i lived in france. i know my french teacher said that it is easy to learn french if you visit spain, but it is also hard to learn if u know in the back of your head that u don't really "need" that language. in the world that we live in, english is most important. if i lived somewhere where i had the opportunity to easily visit another country, it would be easier for me to be in tune with that country. also the US is big and very different. we have warm beaches, rough mountain, big cities, cold ski slopes. a lot of americans want to travel the US first. most of the tourist in..

nyc are american. also, imagine if the u.s wasn't 1 country but many different countries and we all spoke a different language. i live in s.c. i don't consider it "worldly" if i visit n.c. but that how europeans view it it they visit the country right next to them, and for them that is correct. but for us it is not that easy. of course i would be encourage to learn different languages if i was surrounded by diffenct countries. i would have to if i wanted to get out of my country and travel. but english is a global language and we don't feel any pressure to learn many different languages. its a double edged sword. if i learn french and go to spain, then "oh stupid americans they can't speak spanish" if i learn spanish and go to france then it is the smae thing. in order to impress the europeans we would have to know all of their languages. until then would they ever really be happy. i just don't think that going next door is something to pat youself on the back about.

It's very difficult for americans to be "wordly". An airline ticket to go visit my fiance in Denmark from where I live in Oklahoma costs me about a thousand dollars each time. And that's just the ticket! In europe, you can visit another country for the same price as we can visit another state. But americans also have to realize that we aren't alone in the world and we have to get along with other people and not just piss them off.

Yes, Europeans understand where the U.S. is located geographically. Yes, you have some sort of grudge against Europe. Now let's all just move along.
