a franchise tag is a NFL designation that is used in order to retain an unrestricted free agent. it also guaruntees the player is among the average of the five highest paid athletes in his position.i think that it was an excellent choice for the bears to tag him because he deserves to be one of the highest paid players in his position. briggs and urlacher lead the bears defense and it was a very good decision to keep him. the pats have also tagged asante samuel and i think that was an excellent decision by that franchise as well.

A franchise tag is a designation made to an unrestricted free agent by his former team. The designation is a guaranteed one year contract with a value of the average of the five highest paid active players at that position. The deal is only good for one year and each team can only designate one player per year with a franchise tag. The contract can be voided if both sides agree to terms of a new deal before the beginning of the playing season or the player is traded to another team before the start of the playing season. Any contract agreed to by the team and the player after the beginning of the season will not be effective until after the season, thus the player will keep the money obtained from the franchise tag.

Other teams are not allowed to contact the player or his agent about a trade or contract negotiations unless given permission by the team to do so. A player may be given the franchise tag more than one season.

we just put Lance briggs on a franchise tag so that means that he cannot leave the bears for another year unless we put him on a franchise tag next year as well. In a franchise tag you have to average all of the pay for that posision and then we give the average to briggs.

the franchise tag is basically an insurance policy just in case the player leaves your team and signs with another team basically what happens is that when you slap a player with the franchise tag you are entitled to compensation in the form of i believe 1-2 first round draft picks and or cash as well and yes it is a good move on the bears's part to put the franchise tag on lance briggs as he is their best player in terms of their players who are up for free agency anyway it pretty much means that the bears will not lose lance briggs as nobody is gonna want to give up that kind of compensation

Its when the team and player cant agree on a contract. They tag him so he cant sign with another team then they have to pay him a certain amount more then he made the last year. I think it was a good move as long as they were nowhere near reaching deal on a contract.
Check this out.

franchise tags get one-year deals with a salary that is the average of the top 5 salaries at his position...so briggs makes the average of whatever the top 5 linebackers make

just to add to what they already said, knowing the bears they are gonna dangle briggs as trade bait cause they know hes playin for a contract.the bears will either trade him for picks or see what team wants him.the bears will go with the best possible scenario for themselves.meaning dump salary ,get a cheaper lb and put all the pressure on the coaches to do more with less.(wilbur marshall/otis wilson circa 86)mark my words
