5x -3y +2z = 13
2x - y -3z = 1
4x -2y +4z =12
In matrix form:
/ 5 -3 2 \ / x \ / 13 \
| 2 -1 -3 | * | y | = | 1 |
\ 4 -2 4 / \ z / \ 12 /

/ x \ / 5 -3 2 \ ^{-1} / 13 \
| y | = | 2 -1 -3 | * | 1 |
\ z / \ 4 -2 4 / \ 12 /

/ -1 4/5 11/10 \ / 13 \ / 1 \
= | -2 6/5 19/10 | * | 1 | = | -2 |
\ 0 -1/5 1/10 / \ 12 / \ 1 /

Solutions: 1, -2 ,1
Check:
5*1 -3*(-2) +2*1 = 13
2*1 -(-2) -3*(1) = 1
4*1 -2*(-2)+4*1 = 12
Proved.

Cheers.

I guess you would have gotten the answer from others, hopes you really understand how to do it instead of just getting answers. Basically you can just make either x or y as the subject of both equation and do comparison after wards. In this case, i will make x the subject. First equation: 2x-3y=4 2x = 4+3y x = 2+ 3/2 y Second equation: 5x+2y=-9 5x = -9 - 2y x = -9/5 - 2/5y Now you compare: Since x = 2+ 3/2y and also x = -9/5 - 2/5 y, 2+ 3/2y = -9/5 - 2/5 y 20 + 15y = -18 - 4y 19y = -38 y = -2 Substitute y = -2 into first equation , (you can also sub into second equation) 2x-3y=4 2x - 3(-2) = 4 2x + 6 = 4 2x = -2 x = -1 x = -1, y = -2

the third eqn. can be written in the form,
2x-y+2z=6.
solving this equation and the 2nd eqn. 2x-y-3z=1, we get z=1

again putting value of z in eqn. 1 and 2, and solving them we get x=1.
putting values of z and x in either of equations we get y=-2

so, x=1, y=-2 and z=1
