Accounting departments are responsible for

1) preparing financials statements and financial information for management (includes budgeting & forecasting

2) managing day to day accounting functions including paying bills (Accounts Payable), collecting payments (Accounts Receivable), paying employees (Payroll), plus any other accounting function like inventory accounting, cash accounting (bank reconciliations)

3) other things like managing taxes and reporting to various governmental agencies.

The account department handles various things within a business. Where I work, we deal with bank reconciliation, credit card payments & charge backs, balancing our revenue for the day, payroll, sending out invoices, etc.
