I dont know what causes it, but I do know it can be genetic. My son was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome (High functioning autism) and come to find out, my husband has several people on his side of the family like his uncles son and his cousins son both also have been diagnosed with this. There isnt anything you can do to prevent it, because it is not known what actually causes it. Its on the rise, because its being recognized more.

Good questions. My daughter may have an autistic child and believes this boy is on the low end of the spectrum..I believe he is moderate to high end on the spectrum. She is taking it day by day because of the care, discipline and denial.
They do not know what causes it. In my daughter's case I believe that her body was not ready for another pregnancy just four weeks after giving birth. She had to have a C section and respiratory team called in.
Autism is on the rise because there is a wide spectrum of behaviors that label kids autistic. A while back there was certain behaviors that kids who were hyper needed meds. A lot of hyper kids need to burn off energy. People do not want to spend the time watching these kids so they med them to slower behavior.
When kids burn energy they either eat to replace the energy or sleep because they are tired.
I was a hyper kid who had a mom let me play outside a lot and I truely enjoyed my childhood. I rode bike, roller skated on the sidewalk and at a rink, played neighborhood ball games like kick the stick, kick the can, dodge ball, seven up...hopscotch, went to playground a lot...had cousins which are missing in today's world of kids.
As far as autism these are unanswered questions

There is no known cause for autism
some people have blamed the mmr jab and others blame the old age of many parents.
If a young women is having a baby then it is unlikely it is going to have autism but obviously stay away from cigarettes, alcohol and any form of drugs (that includes caffine.)
The rates of autism are on the rise because the worlds population is on the rise and it is unlikely we can do anything about.
All we can really do is accept them and stop trying to talk down to them.
the problem at the moment is the ignorant public especially the western world who thingk these people canot function in society which is wrong.
I have a cousin who is autistic but i love him just as much as i love the rest of my family and he can function just as good as in society as everyone else.

Pregnant women that do not have sonograms usually do not have children with autism. Therefore, in order to reduce the chances of autism, a pregnant woman should decline sonograms during all stages of gestation. Autism is on the rise for two reasons: more sonograms and the definiation of autism now includes other disorders.

Genetics may predispose children for ASD. They may have the perfect storm of genes that make them more vunerable to an environmental insult. There was a study done on mice given vaccines with thimerosol. Many of the mice were completely unaffected, but there was one strain of mice that proved to be vunerable to the thimerosol.

The best way to reduce your chances of many problems for you unborn child is to consume plenty of foods high in folic acid, eat lots of spinach. Spinach contains lots of iron and folic acid. Folic acid improves cardiovascular health which are the pipelines that nurture the brain. Folic acid reduces homocysteine levels. Folic acid also helps the body utilize iron better.

The rate is up because of increased awareness of autism.
I think autism might be increasing also because of the amount of mercury present in our environment.

It is believed to be genetic...it tends to run in families. They have not found the gene yet though. There is no way of preventing it. Awareness is up, thats why it is getting diagnosed more these days.
