You probably won't see better mileage by going faster because you have too much engine. In a low powered car, it's common to see mileage improve as you go faster. Two major factors are at work here. The first is wind resistance, but that's become less of an issue as cars have been more streamlined. The second is throttling loss, which is the power the engine needs to suck air past the mostly closed throttle plate. Going faster may require a bit more power, but the need to open the throttle plate a bit farther may offset that. You won't see this effect in larger engines, but I saw it in a VW Beetle. At 50-55 mph, it got 29 mpg and it didn't matter how carefully I tuned or drove it. I was trying to reach 30 and couldn't. So I decided to drive 65-75 mph to see how much I was saving anyway. The gas mileage jumped to 31. That's a 6% increase, but you'll only see that effect with a small engine and not with an overpowered car.

I would check out the Chevrolet Malibus, they have a 5 year/100,000 warranty and most of their cars get over 30MPG. And yes a I4 is going to get better fuel mileage then a V6, and as to how much better it just depends on the motor configurations. And the performance between the two motors is going to be noticable, especially when you for example are merging onto the freeway.

many v6's get their best gas mileage between 62-65. The best way to figure this out with most cars is to drive just under 2000 rpms in your top gear.
