If you're already getting 54 mbps from the wireless connection (as opposed to getting slower speed because of interference, weak signal, etc.) there may be a Turbo option on your wireless router and wireless adapter, but different manufacturers aren't always compatible. You can also upgrade your router and wireless adapter to 802.11n for faster speed.

The 54 Mbps is a limit of the wireless specification that you are using (802.11g). You will not be able to speed it up without going to the newer specification (802.11n) which will allow 540 Mbps. A link from Wikipedia below describes the specification pretty well.

54 mbs is normal for wireless connections. You can try and upgrade your router to the N versions (belkin, linksys, netgear) as well as your wireless card to the N version. But realistically you shouldn't expect too much more from wireless in terms of MBPS.

The only thing you can do is buy a faster wireless router. 54Mbps is an industry standard. You can always buy a bigger antenna for your router. I know when we installed the router at our church, we bought a larger antenna for our linksys router and it boosted our signals tremendously. The router itsself has "Speedbooster" built in.

Get a 802.1n standard wireless router and NIC. It runs at up to 200Mbps.
