A PhD in Business Administration is one of the most marketable PhDs that exists. It is also one of the hardest programs to get into. The top schools get several hundred applications per year, and accept about ten (my program at Berkeley gets over 300 applications a year and accepts between four and ten students per year -- some schools where I have taught are even more selective).

These programs generally only accept students who want to stay in academia. If you do not want to be an academic -- then you should not get a PhD in Business Administration. You should think about getting an MBA from the best school you can get into.

A Ph.D. is overkill if you want to go into business - the preferred terminal degree for that is the MBA. The Ph.D. is useful if you want to become an academic or, perhaps, for credibility if you want to go into consulting, but for most of those jobs it isn't really necessary. The Ph.D. will teach you how to do theoretical research, not how to run a business.
