I feel that europeans and americans are more alike than they are willing to believe. and not trying to start anything, but is it a little bit, just a tinge, of jealousy? as much as europeans and some americans want to deny american influence in the the world, it is there, present, alive, and still kicking. I think that some europeans have a hard time accepting that because they don't agree with american policy. what they don't seem to notice is that a lot of american don't either. However that is no reason to be outright rude to someone just because they are american. as much as you want to ignore the american influence, we do set the tone for the rest of the world. a lot of the time, other countries don't act unless they know what direction the US is headed in. I guess if i wasn't an american, i might feel this way too. but sitting where i am now, i have to say it kind of gets old. who knows......maybe americans are just more laid back than europeans

Obviously. But you have to remember that much of the camaraderie shared was based in politics and a similar global agenda. With President Skippy in office, we have gotten away from that as we are currently viewed by much of the Industrialized world as an "international bully". What is disturbing about this, is that if you were to actually sit down with someone from the UK, Canada or France, you would probably hear this term as a description or an argument supporting the label. Based on the arguments that I have heard, it is hard to argue with them! I had the pleasure of playing soccer all my life and in college, so I have had a lot of conversations with people of multiple nationalities as soccer entails a large international community. Your absolutely right, the more level headed internationals that you will talk to will recognize that Americans don't necessarily agree with our policy...or our leaders for that fact. But you hit it on the head. I don't know that jealousy is a factor, but I do know we have a image that is rapidly tarnishing across the globe.

I have to say this!
I live over seas (I'm a Westerner), And to be honest I see this ALL the time...Americans come over here Eg.Middle East, and they make a horrible name for Americans.

You go to any bar and there's some American causing problems, making fun, just being an arrogant, cocky American. To be honest the only Americans that I have met over seas that don't have the "American" attitude are the ones that stay away from America for awhile. These ones know what's happening and feel for these countries over here that are being attacked by the States...
I know MANY people that have a bad opinion on American people because of they way they act and they things they say.
You guys need to send more educated, open-minded people like yourself over here to make a good name for yourself!

Don't get me wrong..I don't hate Americans, I know many Americans that are cool, and agree with everything I just wrote!

I'm not sure I understand the question -- Are Americans disliked just because they are American? Are you talking about on a personal level or as a whole? Because as a whole, it would be hard to pinpoint an exact reason.

America is still a young country, a fact that we often forget. In our quest for world influence, we tend to over extend ourselves and ignore our problems at home. Unemployment rate? Our healthcare system? Homeless problem? And, as another commenter stated, our position of the market share is on a downswing compared to the markets of China, Japan and even India.

You say "I guess if i wasn't an american, i might feel this way too. " but you don't know that. I don't know how much travel you've done outside the U.S. but I personally get embaressed when I'm in another country and I spot "a typical American" who refuses to learn the language and the culture and thinks that if they just ask the question louder in English someone can help them. And yet, if they were back in America, and someone came up to them and asked for directions in French or Spanish or Chinese they would think "Why are you in America if you can't speak English?"

Americans are bold -- it's part of our culture, just like we like to have large amounts of person space (visit Japan and ride the transit systems, and you'll see what I mean -- their version of personal space is different from ours).

If you want to look down on other cultures for not liking us, then that is your choice, but its also their choice for looking down on our culture and not liking us. Tit for tat.

EDIT: I read your question. Did you read my answer? I stand by my response. Are you saying that you feel European culture is equal to ours? Because phrases like "tinge of jealousy" and "want to deny [A]merican influence," "what they don't seem to notice" makes it sound like you don't have the same respect for their culture as you do for American culture. And like I said, that is OK, because that is your choice. But you have to realize that people in other cultures are going to look down on American culture as well. If you look down on their culture, why is it so hard to believe that they look down on ours?

EDIT LAST TIME:
I find it interesting that you are trying to convince me and other people that you are not trying to be rude, although you quickly resort to calling me a smart *** and an idiot. Good show . . . good show.

America is a place full of slow witted hicks and bad motels, and food that has no nutritional value except vast amounts of sugar. Why would we be jealous? And btw, american influence globally is beginning to diminish, and is responsible for a lot of the worlds problems. Namely, uncessery wars, increased pollution, the suppression of third world markets, starting arms races, exporting bold knuckle capitalism and puppet governments, removing individual rights and abusing human rights..

USA inc, downtreading worldwide.

I am in total agreement. You could also take a step in another direction - U.S. North and South sometimes hate each other for no apparent reason than the past.

i think that is partly true in the respect that we're too cocky sometimes. This is a nation of proud people and we like to show it. I would say it sometimes rubs others the wrong way
