Baby hamsters are quite small. If the hamster you are looking at is a big fat thing then chances are it is over six weeks old.
Hamsters don't live long so pet shops rarely have really really old ones. The oldest ours get before sale is about ten weeks but that's rare. A ten week old hamster will look like a fully grown one! It's all about the size!
Don't be fooled by the old 'our breeder always produces big babies' rubbish. It is a load of old ****.

Young hamsters, aged about 5 weeks are about the size of a large egg. We do not recommend purchasing them if under this size simply for the fact that children drop them and do not know how to handle them properly. This is why hamsters bite lots of times. A hamster that is the size of 2 eggs is still not full grown unless the parents are small. The hamsters we breed end up being quite large because the parents are large. Some ways to tell an older hamster are to look at the front teeth. If the teeth are really brown and long, that is a good indication of an old hamster. Older hamsters start getting just a wee bit of hair loss also. Some independent pet shops may have the breeding pair right in the store for you to see. Another way to tell a really young hamster is how jumpy they are. It is really difficult to hold one and keep it still. Always have the pet shop show you the hamsters butt to make sure there is no hair with feces stuck to it because that is an indication of wet tail.

Find a friend who has a hamster and see how big theirs is and then see if the ones in the pet shop are smaller or not.
Your best to find a breeder though as pet shop hamsters are usually less tame and sexes are often kept together so if you buy a girl she might already be pregnant.

1st, they will be really small, trust me, you can tell.
2nd, Ask someone who works there, they should know how long ago the hamsters were born. If not, maybe check another store that does know ? Good Luck

If a hamster is with other hamsters-its siblings, then it is young, and not mature enough to defend its territory. They will look quite small and be a bit nervy. their fur looks really really fluffy!

You can tell by their size and appearance. Very young hamsters are small and their body is thinner than an older hamster.
It will be easy to tell.
