I think i would rather have a dog. They are cool, intelligent, loyal, friendly and protective. It's the next best thing to a best friend. And they are good listeners too.
Hey hypes, you haven't been coming online that often, maybe you got friends off-line and forgot about me. I can't believe you haven't mailed me yet. There will be hell you pay sweetheart. :-(

Actually, I have been nanny to all the above pets.
My favorite now and forever is my pot belly pig.
She's way cooler than dogs- she doesn't jump or sniff inappropriately.
I currently have 2 dogs, 6 cats, 3 birds, aquarium and my beloved pig. They all get along. (Except the cats keep looking at my tweeties like yum-yums). All of them are rescued because some "owner" didn't plan ahead or have a clue- some were just plain mean. (Yes, even the fish...)
Rats are the best of the rodent family- including rabbits and guniea pigs- they are smart, clean and even affectionate. A hamster, gerbil, mouse etc will bite your lip and are pretty much only good to look at and keep you up at night running that wheel.
Tiny Turtles are boring, snakes eat live things, ferrets eat furniture.
Birds are good company and they're always in a good mood.
Fish are cool- but a lot of work. Getting the water just right...
but the water is good for plants when you clean it out.
Each one brings something unique to the table. Also, there's things like "life expectancy"- My pig, for instance can live to be 20 years easily. Cats 10-15 years, Dogs 10 years (the larger the dog the shorter the life span), Birds- some parrots live into the 90's and above.
Fish- 24 hours to forever
Rodents- depends, but generally shorter than most house pets.
Remember too, that every baby- even pinkie mice are adorable, but they grow- a cute puppy can grow fast into a huge dog...
If you're trying to figure out which pet is best for you- why not volunteer at a shelter and test drive them.
They all require patience, love and an understanding of their individual needs.
Yards to rake, boxes to scoop, cages to hose, vets, liscenses, spaying / neutering, dietary needs, grooming-
Pig- the best of everything- if you have space, patience, time and a sense of humor.
Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.
cat -independent and entertaining
birds -cheerful and low maintenence- take up very little space.
dogs- loyal but high maintenence- and a lot of work.
rodents- great starter pets- also space saving
Remember that pets are a big responsibility and comittment.
So choose wisely and give them your best. Be blessed.

Pet domestic Fancy Rats !! Which you did not mention.
They are very clean, loving little buddies.
Mine have always been litter trained & being disabled it gives me a a low maintenance pet.
We rescued our latest from a pet shop that was going to feed him to a Boa. I understand about the whole food chain but they were going to do it in a not so humane way.

Dogs! Beagles especially. They are loyal, unconditional and protective. They aren't totally independant like cats. I found that dogs are like little kids, they give love, need love and will award you with respect if you respect them. They also seem to communicate more.

Dogs are my personal favorite. However, I am not the only one living in my house, so we have dogs, cats, fish.
I prefer dogs because they protect you, give you love and are funny to be with.

rats most definately. Rats are loyal, they sit on your soulder, you can trin them to NEVER pee and poop on you and only in the cage. they are the best pets in the world i guarentee. they cost 8 dollars. they will eat anything. they love table scraps. all they need is for you to play with them, to be fed, and to have fresh clean water
