It's a strange choice for a substitute. I read in a paper once that a man kept a ferret and trusted it and one day the ferret crawled down his pants and bit his private parts.

Ferrets are great pets for a flat as they sleep for about 20 hours a day so don't need you to be there all of the time. Neutered adults do not small any worse than a cat or a dog and in some cases I know, not nearly as bad. Trained propoerly you can give it the run of your flat and it will even use a litter tray.
They also do not merit their bad press about being biters. If you treat a ferret badly it will bite. If you treat it well you have more chance of being bitten by a hamster or even a dog. I have 10 ferrets (never been bitten)although only one lives indoors.
If you decide to get one please make sure that you investigate them fully there are a lot of good websites that can give you very good guidance. Also many people on the various sites would be happy for you to meet their animals.
I personally would recommend getting an adult from a rescue as they would never pass one on to you that it is not fully tame. Ferret kits are delinquents and very rarely come with their manners fully refined.

Provided you buy a baby that has been well handled they make great pets. They like company so getting 2 is good.
Remember females must be spayed or they can stay in heat till they die from complications. It's best to neuter males too or else they will smell bad.

A ferret is no good for anyone as a pet. They are not pets but working animals. they stink bite you and arent to be kept by anyone who doesnt know how to handle them. Forget it babe. I know from experience and knew how to handle them but still got bit several times. and as for in the house there is no way you should try it. Babe just read all the answers above and they are all a load of c**p. All my family have had them for hunting etc. Please dont consider it babe. They are nasty and you can never tame one.

yes, but remember they are like people, some are gentle and easy to live with - some are crabby & mean. Hopefully you will find a gentle one.

only if you can afford them, a cage, and vet care(just in case), plus you need to let them run around everyday, then i don't see why not.
please make sure you learn as much about them as possible before buying, to ensure the best care. good luck!!
