if i have an application that requires a 3ghz processor(such as a game), would a 2.13ghz intel core 2 duo processor work? if so does that mean that the processor works as a single processor with double the advertised speed?

The last guy is absolutely wrong, you cannot just doulbe the speed. The program will work on a 2.13Ghz Core 2 Duo, because the Core 2 Duos get a lot more work done at lower speeds than Pentium 4s, which is what they are basing the 3GHz recommendation on. They do more instructions per cycle, has a faster FSB, etc. But you cannot just double the speed, you have two cores each running at 2.13Ghz.

Dual Core processors have 2 cores, which actually could be translated to Twin Processors, so on a 2.13 DC you get 4.26 GHz of a single processor. This speeds up things a lot

BUT!

The operating system and application should be able to take advantage of the two cores. Right now this can be done in Windows Vista, Mac OS X version 10.4 Tiger and concerning applications created later than March 2006, and only when taking advantage of the dual core makes sense. For example, yahoo messenger that takes up to 5% on an 1 GHz processor would not need to take advantage of the Dual Core, as they would never use this amount of speed.

In fact, the speed is the double advertised and latest operating systems such as Vista and OS X v 10.4 can force an application like a game that requires 3GHz, but not designed for the 2 cores, to fully use the one core at its maximum speed, keeping all other prosecces (operating system, apps in the background etc.) on the other core, and therefore speed things up as much as possible. but still for these games, a 4.26 GHz solo Proseccor could be much better, but you could not actually see any significant difference, as the architecture of the new core 2 duo makes it way faster than the pentium, so no particular harm done, it is very insignificant.

Of course Dual and even the brand new Quad (meaning 4!!!) Core systems are the future and should definitely be selected.

No, it won't do what you say, but it will run it just fine. Nothing REQUIRES a 3GHz processor these days. It will run with less, just slower.
